A book written by Roddy Doyle is a tale about a group of teenagers in Dublin, Ireland. The teenagers are a mismatched group with no talent that decide to start a Rhythm and Blues (R&B) band. They quickly start learning how to play their instrument, and play a number of local gigs. As with most of Roddy Doyles other works the characters are very complex, and change throughout the book.

The book was made into a movie of the same name in 1991 starring Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, and a large supporting cast.
