The Rock of Dunamase (also known as the Fort of the Plain), located in County Laois of Ireland, is traditionally held to be the home of the Seven Septs of Leix, who were the presinding families in that area until the 1600s. The main families were the Lawlors and the O'Morres. A third family, the O'Dempseyes, betrayed the Lawlors and the O'Morres and then swore allegiance to Queen Mary I of England. She then created Queen's County out of the region of Leix.
