Páirc Uí Chaoimh is a stadium in Ireland opened in June 6, 1976. It was an historic occasion for the GAA, not only in Cork, but as a whole, because this was the first custom-built stadium in the 92 years history of existence. The whole country witnessed the impressive ceremonies on RTÉ television. Among those present were many dignatories of Church and State, as well as high ranking officials of the association from all parts of the country.
It was indeed appropriate that his fine stadium should be dedicated to the memory of the man who was recognised as the architect of the modern GAA - Padraig O Chaoimh. It was also fitting that the stadium's covered stand should commemorate Cork's second president of the G.A.A, Sean MacCarthaigh, a man who gave a life-time of service to the G.A.A at every level. The official opening was performed by the then presicent of the GAA, Con Murphy, who had been in the forefront of all the planning, negotiation and fund-raising leading to the erection of the £1m plus stadium. Two challenge games were played to mark the opening.
