January 5, 1839 is now part of Irish legend and mythology. It was The Night of the Big Wind, a storm of destructive proportions. Severe damage was caused throughout the country. When the Old Age Pension was being introduced in the early twentieth century, one of the questions asked of applicants was if he/she could remember the storm of 1839.
