RTÉ2 started broadcasting in 1978. Its name was changed to Network 2 in the late 1988. There was another major relaunch in 1997, the channel was visually rebranded as N2, though announcers continued to refer to Network 2. Things came full circle in October 2004 when it was rebranded back to RTÉ2.

As the name suggests, it is the 2nd station of the state broadcaster, RTÉ. RTÉ2's main emphasis is childern and young people programmes, particularly during the daytime and sports and American imports in the evenings. It is also the home of RTÉ's live sports coverage.

RTÉ2 is universally available across the Republic of Ireland and many part of Northern Ireland on the VHF and UHF bands. It ss also available on satellite to Republic of Ireland subscribers to Sky Digital.
