The granite Mountains of Mourne are targeted to become the first national park of Northern Ireland. They are located in the County Down, near the town of Newcastle. The highest peak in the Mournes (and Northern Ireland) is Slieve Donard at 2,796 feet (848 metres). The famous Silent Valley Reservoir is located in the centre of the region. It lies in the valley between Slievenalogh and Slieve Binnian. The Mountains of Mourne are visited by many tourists, hill walkers, cyclists and rock climbers.
