These channels are available as free-to-air analogue broadcasts, as well as on digital, satellite and cable systems.
Radio Telifís Éireann - the "independent" state broadcasting company
These 3 stations are available as free-to-air analogue broadcasts in almost all areas of the Republic and many parts of Northern Ireland.
Independent terrestrial station
TV3 is available as free-to-air analogue broadcasts in most areas of the Republic and many parts of Northern Ireland.
There is currently no digital terrestrial tv service in the Republic apart from reception of UK stations in some limited areas.
(NI=North of Ireland,This means that on 4 channel above whit this will show North of Ireland version of the news & add breaks (channel 4 only change the add breaks & not the news or anything elase)& localprograms form NI too These stations are available as free-to-air analogue broadcasts in almost all areas of Northern Ireland and many northern parts of the Republic. Welsh version can be received on parts of the east coast. These channels are also available on Cable & MMDS (E.g.Chours & NTL) & Sky (Satellite) Reception of Five is more limited &can't be pick up in any part of republic (only by some local cable company's & on sky illegally) They are also available on digital terrestrial transmissions in many parts of Northern Ireland and some limited northern parts of the Republic.
Most of these channels are available on the Freeview service as well as in basic digital cable and satellite packages.
Cable TV services are available in most major cities and towns in Ireland. In the Republic the major cable companies are NTL (which serves Dublin, Galway and Waterford) and Chorus (which serves Cork, Limierck, many towns in the midlands and south and some outer Dublin suburbs). In most areas about 15 channels are provided on the standard analogue package. Typically this includes the 4 Irish terrestrial stations, the Northern Ireland version of the 4 main UK stations and about 7 other general enertainment or news services, mostly from the UK. Digital cable service is available in many areas: this provides about 5 times as many channels.
Some cable companies also operate a Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) which proves a similar service to cable over the air in areas which are not cabled.
In Nothern Ireland the cable operator is NTL.
Sky Digital is the dominant satellite TV provider in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.
The following channels are only available on cable and satellite television, whether in basic packages or as premium channels. Most of them originate from the UK. Note: many channels have "+1" services, carrying the same programmes delayed by one hour to give viewers a second chance to catch a favourite programme.
