The Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) replaces the Intermediate Certificate Examination in Ireland since 1992 and is accredited by the State Examinations Commission. The Junior Certificate is taken not before age 14 and a student usually takes about 10 subjects, including Maths, English and Irish. Other subjects include business, language, science and technical type studies.

The examination does not reach the standards for college or university entrance, instead a school leaver will typically take the Leaving Certificate Examination after completion of the Junior Certificate.
