The Minister for Education & Science is the chief person at the Department of Education & Science is engaged in a wide range of activities covering pllicy planning, quality assurance and providing a broad range of services for education in the Republic of Ireland.

In recent years some of these functions have been given to statutory authorities, in particular the Higher Education Authority, the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland and the State Examinations Commission. Irish universities and colleges are to a large extent free of government control, with this been largely limited to policy formation and statistics prepairation.

From its inception in 1921 the minister was titled the Minister for Education, in 1997 this changed to the Minister for Education & Science. This change in title was to reflect the importance of science in education rather than new functions of the minister.
