There are currently large backlogs of German-to-English and French-to-English translation requests. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Ireland Information Guide is a multilingual project; as such, we may have articles on one subject available in many languages. The various languages each appear in semi-separate wikis, linked by interlanguage links.

Articles on the same subject in separate languages are independently editable and edited; they are not required to be translations of one another or to strictly maintain a correspondence in form, style, content, or attitude (so long as they all accord with the NPOV policy), though it is hoped that polyglots who work in multiple languages will help spread new information around between the articles in different languages. This page exists in support of that work.

Translating entire articles into another language can be helpful when getting started, but there are some caveats:

  • Translation is hard. Amateur translators tend to produce prose that is unnatural, and perhaps incorrect when it comes to specialized terminology.
  • Machine translation is much much worse. Never use machine translation to create an article!

This page exists as a place to request and to coordinate translations of articles from foreign-language Ireland Information Guides into English. Creation of a similar page in any foreign-language Ireland Information Guide is encouraged, but this page is not intended as a place to request translations in the opposite direction (i.e. from English to another language). That would belong on a meta-page of the appropriate Ireland Information Guide.

See Ireland Information Guide:Pages needing translation into English for pages on the English Ireland Information Guide that will shortly be deleted unless translated.

This page has three major sections: #Requested Translations, #Completed Translations and #Translators Available. There are also #Instructions on how to deal with pages needing translation.

This project was started on February 10, 2004.

Instructions

To request an article please add a level-3 heading and indicate:

  • Article: link to foreign-language article in the form [[:xx:Title]]. Remember the initial colon before the language code. Without it the link will point to the equivalent of this translation page in the specified language.
  • Corresponding English-language article: <article name> (or None); should be filled in if article already exists or if someone does a partial translation.
  • Worth doing because: Typically one or more of
    • No corresponding English article
    • Material to incorporate into English-language article
    • Seems to contradict English-language article
    • Specialized local knowledge
  • Originally Requested by: <user> <date> (use ~~~~)
  • Status: (originally) "Unclaimed".
To take responsibility for the work, indicate "In progress <user> <date>".
If you're finished with what you can handle, but there is more to do: "Partially translated by <user> <date>".
One step past thate might be "Translated, but review requested by <user> <date>".
If it's finished, mark it "Complete <user> <date>" and move it (as described below).
  • Other notes: Anything else you want to add.

Follow the last line with an HTML <br /> to keep the new (as of June 2004) software happy: it no longer preserves the presence of a blank link as meaning separate bullet lists.

When you complete work on an article, it would be polite to inform the original requester on his/her talk page, move this request to the talk page of the relevant article, and add an entry to #Completed Translations.

After about 30 days, even that can be moved to Ireland Information Guide:Translation archive

Requested Translations

Catalan-to-English

Nothing at this time.

Czech-to-English

  • Article: cs:Velké Svatoňovice
  • Corresponding English-language article: Velke Svatonovice.
  • Worth doing because: Extensive historical information missing from English-language article.
  • Originally Requested by: Jmabel 07:32, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Unclaimed
  • Other notes: This was originally placed in the English-language Ireland Information Guide; an extensive history section was written in Czech. No one dealt with translating it in the mandated 2 weeks, so I've moved it to the Czech Ireland Information Guide and am requesting that someone translate. One possible matter of concern: it wouldn't astound me if the Czech-language content is a copyvio, might want to research that before translating. -- Jmabel 07:32, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)

Chinese-to-English

  • Article: zh-tw:西藏獨立運動
  • Corresponding English-language article: International Tibet Independence Movement.
  • Worth doing because: Long article in Chinese; English-language article is a stub
  • Originally Requested by: Jmabel on behalf of User:Eequor

  • Other notes: User:Eequor tagged the English-language page as "needing translation", but did not note it here.

  • Article: zh:熵 (生态学)
  • Corresponding English-language article: Entropy (ecology).
  • Worth doing because: a supplementary to existing explanation to Entropy.
  • Originally Requested by: Tomchiukc 2 June 2004
  • Status: Done. Felix Wan 23:23, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Other notes: I do not quite follow the derivation. Someone with expertise in that area please help to make corrections. Felix Wan 23:23, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Danish-to-English

Nothing at this time.

Dutch-to-English

Nothing at this time.

Esperanto-to-English

  • Article: eo:Interlingvao
  • Corresponding English-language article: Interlingua
  • Worth doing because: Material to incorporate into English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: Itai 17:40, 5 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Unclaimed
  • Other notes: Esperanto articles appears to contain quite a lot of Esperanto-related information; this might call for the creation of a new article - Esperanto and Interlingua comparison, for instance - to accommodate this, rather than simply translate the lot into Interlingua.

French-to-English

French featured articles - many of these are very good and merit translation

  • Article: fr:Jeu d'aventure
  • Corresponding English-language article: Adventure game
  • Worth doing because: More extensive than English-language article.
  • Originally Requested by: FiP 15:49, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Unclaimed
  • Other notes:

  • Article: fr:Jean Moulin
  • Corresponding English-language article: Jean Moulin
  • Worth doing because: More extensive than English-language article.
  • Originally Requested by: FiP 11:21, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Done by FiP :) needs reviewing though
  • Other notes:

  • Article: fr:Alphabet arabe
  • Corresponding English-language article: Arabic alphabet; there also appears to be a page of unknown status Talk:Arabic alphabet/from the French Ireland Information Guide
  • Worth doing because: Material to incorporate into English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: User:217.158.203.216 9 Aug 2003

  • Other notes: Moved from Ireland Information Guide:Requests for translation

  • Article: various
  • Corresponding English-language article: French science fiction, Science fiction
  • Worth doing because: Extensive, interesting, useful information
  • Originally Requested by: Diderot 15:26, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: In progress
  • Other notes: This is an on-going personal project for which I would appreciate any help I can get. The French articles on science fiction have content which is original, interesting and quite different from related English content. I am trying to bring that material over to the English Ireland Information Guide by adding content about Anglo-American and global science fiction to the relevant English pages, and by creating a set of new pages - a sort of micropedia - around French language science fiction in particular, with the article French science fiction acting as a hub. Also, this content should be referenced back to the French Ireland Information Guide and where it reveals gaps on the French side, stubs and translations ought to go up on the French side.

If this sounds interesting to you and you can translate, just go over to French science fiction or to the French Ireland Information Guide and dive in, or if you can't translate, copy-edit and peer review translated articles.

    Diderot 15:26, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • Article: fr:Méthode Trachtenberg
  • Corresponding English-language article: Trachtenberg system

  • Status: completed by --Frenchgeek 05:12, Aug 7, 2004 (UTC)
  • Other notes: One of the external links is to a website that advertises a product. Should I delete that link?

  • Article: fr:Techniques de calcul mental
  • Corresponding English-language article: Mental calculation
  • Worth doing because: Material to incorporate into English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: 80.160.122.64 00:43, 29 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status:

  • Originally Requested by: 80.160.122.64 00:43, 29 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status:
  • Other notes: It seems like the French article is both about plant and the liquor but I think there is some useful material there.

German-to-English

German featured articles - many are great, while the English versions are either short or nonexistent

  • Article: de:Paragraph 175 (Geschichte)
  • Corresponding English-language article: Paragraph 175
  • Worth doing because: Interesting topic; I'd like to know more, and the German article certainly looks more informative than the English one.
  • Originally Requested by: grendel|khan 22:56, 2004 Aug 30 (UTC)
  • Status: I'll do what I can on this over the next few days. -- Jmabel 06:01, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

  • Zuse - author mentions german version, needs a wee cleanup too. Dunc_Harris| 10:55, 3 Jun 2004 (UTC)

  • Article: de:Buchdruck (and some of the linked-to pages!)
  • Corresponding English-language article: printing
  • Worth doing because: German version is much more complete than English, english one is quite poor, doesn't cover topic adequately
  • Originally Requested by: Lady Tenar 00:21, 4 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status:
  • Other notes: May be this should be done by someone who knows a bit about the topic, i'm not doing it myself because i can't translate most of the words specific to printing

  • Article: de:Westwall
  • Corresponding English-language article: Siegfried Line
  • Worth doing because: English version is a stub, German looks comprehensive
  • Originally Requested by: Ellsworth 23:13, 15 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status:
  • Other notes:

  • Article: de:Friedrich II. (HRR)
  • Corresponding English-language article: Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor
  • Worth doing because: Material to incorporate into English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: Itai 02:34, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Unclaimed
  • Other notes: Not urgent, as English article is pretty comprehensive.

  • Article: de:John Sedgwick
  • Corresponding English-language article: John Sedgwick
  • Worth doing because: German article contains much more info than its English counterpart, a tiny stub.
  • Originally Requested by: Livajo 19:04, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Status:
  • Other notes: I just found out the German version is a literal translation taken from [1] (http://www.civilwarhome.com/sedgwickbio.htm), therefore it is less a translation but copyright issue... Olaf Fritz 18:02, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I've added a note about that to de:Ireland Information Guide:Artikel mit noch ungeklärten Urheberrechten. -- Jmabel 21:19, Aug 27, 2004 (UTC)
See User_talk:Olaf_Fritz for comparison - At least it is partially quoted from Stewart Sifakis, "Who Was Who In The Civil War", 1988. Olaf Fritz 21:30, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • Article: de:Schießbefehl
  • Corresponding English-language article: None
  • Worth doing because: Material to incorporate into English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: Itai 22:28, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Done. See Schiessbefehl. Someone check my style and grammar, please. - Olaf Fritz 21:39, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I've done some further cleanup. I think it's mostly good, but there was one very ambiguous sentence. Could someone please see Talk:Schiessbefehl and see if they can clarify? Thanks. -- Jmabel 23:06, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

Japanese-to-English

  • Article: ja:さいたま市#地名の由来 (just this segment)
  • Corresponding English-language article: Saitama, Saitama#Toponym
  • Worth doing because: Saitama seems to be one of the few large cities whose name doesn't have Kanji. The origin of this name is hard to find on English webpages.
  • Originally requested by: --Menchi 10:29, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: I have translated it, hopefully this is helpful! CES 06:14, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
  • Other notes: Adding a paragraph on those proper nouns (place and personal names) that do not (cannot) have Kanji in Kanji would be informative too.

  • Corresponding English-language article: Constantin Brancusi
  • Worth doing because:
    • Material to incorporate into English-language article
    • Specialized local knowledge

  • Status: Not started -- Jmabel 01:42, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)

  • Worth doing because:
    • Specialized local knowledge
    • No corresponding English-language article
  • Originally Requested by: Jmabel 01:42, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: Not started -- Jmabel 01:42, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)
  • Other notes: One of Romania's most prominent authors, still a household word there more than a century after his death. Deserves an article, for sure.

  • Article: ro:Mihai Eminescu
  • Corresponding English-language article: Mihai Eminescu
  • Worth doing because:
    • Material to incorporate into English-language article
    • Specialized local knowledge
  • Originally Requested by: Jmabel 07:44, 7 May 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: I did a little, but (1) some of it is beyond me and (2) I've got too much else to work on. -- Jmabel 01:42, Aug 11, 2004 (UTC)
  • Other notes: I originally translated this a while back. However, there have been recent massive additions to the Romanian-language article. I'm not sure it's all worth translating, but it's certainly worth someone taking a good look. -- Jmabel 07:44, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

Completed Translations

Remember that a "completed" translation can always be improved by people who do not speak the language it was translated from — if you enjoy copyediting, browse these articles and tidy up any unnatural-sounding language which might have slipped in.

For earlier translations, see Ireland Information Guide:Translation archive.
