A Garda is a member of the Irish police force, known collectively as the Gardai.
The Irish Constabulary was established in 1822 which became the Royal Irish Constabulary (R.I.C.) in 1867 and the establishment of the Dublin Police in 1836. After the Republic of Ireland gained its independence in 1922, the R.I.C. was disbanded in 1922 and a newly-formed Garda Siochana was set up and lead by Commissioner Michael Staines, when the Irish administration took over from the British. The Garda Siochana Act was passed in 1924.
The Garda Síochána na h-Éireann (Guardians of the Peace of Ireland) were merged with the Dublin Metropolitan Police (D.M.P.) in 1925.
