Sir Jeffrey Amherst was created Baron Amherst of Holmesdale in 1776, with a normal remainder, and then Baron Amherst of Montreal in 1788 with a special remainder to a nephew. The 2nd Baron was created Earl Amherst and Viscount Holmesdale in 1826. The titles became extinct in 1993.
