The City and District of St Albans is a local government district with the status of a city, in Hertfordshire, England. It includes the St Albans urban area, in addition to the parishes of Colney Heath, Harpenden Rural, Harpenden Town, London Colney, Redbourn, St Michael, St Stephen, Sandridge and Wheathampstead.
The district has a rather irregular name: typically districts with the status of cities are known simply as Cities, (e.g the City of Peterborough or the City of York). Formally it is called the City of St Albans, but its council tends to prefer the longer name. However, the Council is inconsistent on the issue, calling itself from time to time the St Albans District Council and St Albans City Council.
The district was created in 1974 from the combination of the Borough of St Albans, the Harpenden Urban District and the St Albans Rural District.
Nearby places outside the district include Hatfield to the east, Welwyn Garden City to the northeast, Luton and Dunstable to the northwest, Hemel Hempstead to the west, Watford to the southwest and Borehamwood to the south.
