Charles Mitchel (1920-1996), Irish actor and television newsreader.

Charles Mitchel was born in Dublin in 1920. He was educated at Clongowes Wood and Trinity College Dublin. Mitchel became a leading member of the Trinity Players. He left college in 1947 without taking a degree and joined the Gate Theatre. In 1961 he joined the newly formed Teilifís Éireann as a newsreader and he read the first news bulletin on 1 January 1962. Mitchel was awarded television personality of the year and was the first RTÉ presenter to be awarded a prestigious Jacobs Award. Mitchel retired as a newsreader in November 1984,

Charles Mitchel died on 18 August 1996 in Dublin.
